Privacy Policy

At HIO, our mission is to provide intelligent environments that help people live to their full potential.  

It all starts with privacy.  While property owners own the smart devices in their buildings, we believe residents should own the data they create.  We create a personalized living experience with this data, and residents are in full control of how that data is shared.

This Statement of Privacy applies to project-mongoose, Project-Mongoose, LLC (“Mongoose”), and all subsidiary products, including but not limited to HIO.  This Privacy Policy governs data collection and usage. For the purposes  of this Privacy Policy, unless otherwise noted, all references to Project-Mongoose, LLC include HIO,  https://www.project-mongoose.com/ and project-mongoose. The project-mongoose application is  a smart home application, and HIO is a text-based service designed to answer questions about residential buildings (hereby referred to as a “concierge” service). By using the project-mongoose application or HIO, you consent to the data  practices described in this statement.

Collection of your Personal Information 

In order to better provide you with products and services offered, project-mongoose may collect  personally identifiable information, such as your:  

  

- First and Last Name 

- E-mail Address 

- Phone Number 

- Physical Address 

- Apartment Number

  

We do not collect any personal information about you unless you voluntarily provide it to us.  However, you may be required to provide certain personal information to us when you elect to use certain products or services. These may include: (a) registering for an account; (b) entering a sweepstakes or contest sponsored by us or one of our partners; (c) signing up for special offers from selected third parties; (d) sending us an email message; (e) submitting your credit card or other payment information when ordering and purchasing products and services; (f) escalating situations to a property manager. To wit, we will use your information for communicating with you in relation to services and/or  products you have requested from us. When using Mongoose, HIO, or any subsidiaries, do not provide any personally identifiable information other than those outlined above.

Collection of Smart Device data

As you use the project-mongoose software, information is gathered from the property’s smart devices that are integrated into the solution (eg: unit door locks, light switches, window shade operation, thermostat) and tenant-owned devices you choose to integrate (eg.  smart speaker system).  The information collected by project-mongoose includes data created and published by the specific smart device (e.g. time of entry and exit, temperature control, electricity usage, average decibel level of speaker system, etcetera). 

 
Collection of Metadata

As you interact with the concierge system, transcripts of text conversations will be shared with project-mongoose to aid in research and development.  Data will be shared with property management and/or corporate employees to report on usage trends and identify errors. 

 
Integration with OpenAI

project-mongoose models are powered by OpenAI.  All project-mongoose models are compliant with OpenAI’s terms of use (https://openai.com/policies/terms-of-use).  Usage of our models (in smart home integration and the concierge service) constitutes an agreement with OpenAI’s Privacy Policy (https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy), most notably the section “Personal Information We Receive Automatically From Your Use of the Services.” 

 

Use of your Personal Information  

project-mongoose collects and uses your personal information to operate and deliver the services  you have requested.

project-mongoose may also use your personally identifiable information to inform you of other  products or services available from project-mongoose. 

 
Use of Smart Device Data Collected

When you use devices integrated with project-mongoose, we collect this smart device data to build models of your habits and in turn automate these habits for you.  This personal, experience level data is accessible by you and by project-mongoose.  We will also use your data to share anonymous, aggregated, or de-identified data with the property manager.  In the case of utility issues such as broken devices, high humidity, or abnormal temperatures, apartment information will be shared with property management staff to facilitate repair.

 

Sharing Information with Third Parties 

project-mongoose does not sell, rent or lease its customer lists to third parties.

project-mongoose may share data with trusted partners to help perform statistical analysis, send  you email or postal mail, provide customer support, or arrange for deliveries. All such third parties are prohibited from using your personal information except to provide these services to project-mongoose, and they are required to maintain the confidentiality of your information.    

project-mongoose may disclose your personal information, without notice, if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to: (a) conform to the edicts of the law  or comply with legal process served on project-mongoose or the site; (b) protect and defend the  rights or property of project-mongoose; and/or (c) act under exigent circumstances to protect the  personal safety of users of project-mongoose, or the public.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. All the above categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.

 
Aggregated Information

While your personally identifying information is protected as outlined above, we reserve the right to use, transfer, sell, and share aggregated, anonymous data about our users as a group for any business purpose, such as analyzing usage trends and seeking compatible advertisers and partners.

 
Right to Deletion

Subject to certain exceptions set out below, on receipt of a verifiable request from you, we will:  

  • Delete your personal information from our records; and 

  • Direct any service providers to delete your personal information from their records.

Please note that we may not be able to comply with requests to delete your personal information if it is necessary to:  

  • Complete the transaction for which the personal information was collected, fulfill the terms of a written warranty or product recall conducted in accordance with federal law, provide a good or service requested by you, or reasonably anticipated within the context of our ongoing business relationship with you, or otherwise perform a contract between you and us; 

  • Detect security incidents, protect against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity; or prosecute those responsible for that activity; 

  • Debug to identify and repair errors that impair existing intended functionality; • 

  • Comply with the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act; 

  • Comply with an existing legal obligation.

 
Children Under Thirteen 

project-mongoose does not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children  under the age of thirteen. If you are under the age of thirteen, you must ask your parent or guardian  for permission to use this application.    

 
E-mail Communications 

From time to time, project-mongoose may contact you via email for the purpose of providing  announcements, promotional offers, alerts, confirmations, surveys, and/or other general  communication. In order to improve our Services, we may receive a notification when you open an  email from project-mongoose or click on a link therein.

If you would like to stop receiving marketing or promotional communications via email from  project-mongoose, you may opt out of such communications by replying STOP.

 
External Data Storage Sites 

We may store your data on servers provided by third party hosting vendors with whom we have  contracted.  

 
Security and Encryption

We use procedural and technical safeguards to protect your personal information against loss or theft, as well as unauthorized access and disclosure to protect your privacy, including encryption, “firewalls” and Secure Socket Layers (SSL).  (to learn more about SSL, please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Sockets_Layer.)  While we use many different security techniques to protect such data from unauthorized access by users, you understand that “perfect security” does not exist on the Internet.

 
Changes to this Statement 

project-mongoose reserves the right to change this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify  you about significant changes in the way we treat personal information by sending a notice to the  primary email address specified in your account, by placing a prominent notice on our application,  and by updating any privacy information on our website. Your continued use of the application and/or Services  available after such modifications will constitute your: (a) acknowledgment of the modified Privacy  Policy; and (b) agreement to abide and be bound by that Policy.
